How to secure your FTP connection to your account. Tip of the day

Securing your ftp connection should be done by everyone that uses ftp. How can I do this? First you will need to notify support@colorteck.com to get SSH enabled. Now this may be a little scary to some even mentioning the word SSH. Do not worry it is not complicated at all. All you need to do is open your ftp program after support enabled SSH for you and choose SFTP. Now you will be connecting to FTP securely and limiting the risk if someone picking up your username and password.

Having issues with someone linking to your images? If so you can login to your cPanel control panel and block any Ip that you wish to block. Getting specific country Ip’s can be found here. http://www.blackholes.us/zones/countries/countries.rbl. You ca block any country you do not wish to get to your web site. This really helps those who sell online if they get fraud orders from a specific country.

Today’s tip of the day

Setting up your email in Outlook and numerous other email clients is very simple to do. We get many support tickets on this issue when it is clearly located very where on our web site. The email setting can be located in your Account Email we send you.

First you need to login to cPanel (your control panel) and click on email management. Next add the email and setup the password. Now go into your email clients and set the setting below.

POP = mail.yourdomain.com
SMPT = mail.yourdomain.com
Username: yourusername@yourdomain.com
Password: The password you setup in your cPanel.

Now after you have setup your email and try to connect. If you have all the information but still can not connect to the server you will need to call your ISP to see if they are blocking port 25. If they are blocking port 25 then you will need to use port 26.

Tip of the day #3

Let’s say your website is about 300 megabytes total but your cPanel control panel is reporting 1000 megabytes. Why is this happening you may ask? The very first thing you need to check is to see if you have any files located in your trash bin from the cPanel file manager link. If you do delete all files that you no longer need.

The next item you need to look at is if you have any backups stored on your account. Most backups are going to be located in your /home directory not your public_html directory. Now remove the backups if you no longer need them.

The last place and most common area to use up your disk space is the temp folder. Temp folder will store all your log files for programs like Urchin,Analog,Webalizer and Awstats. If you are not using statistic programs you can turn them off in your cPanel control by clicking the link statistics configuration. You will still need to delete the files that each program has created. In your temp folder you will see each program where you can delete the files. You can do this even if you plan on using statistics. Remove the profiles you do not want. Now close your browser and clear the browser cache. Log back into cPanel and you should see the change. If you do not then you need to contact support to help you with the issue.

Tip of the day #2 !

Have you ever had your computer at home or work just start slowing down? Well the same thing can happen to your web site if you are using MySQL databases if you do not optimize them when needed. This has nothing to do with the server you are on. We try to automatically optimize every client’s database at least once a week. To do this your self all you need to do is login to cPanel and click on Phpmyadmin. Next you will see your databases on the left. Click on the database name you want to optimize. The right panel will show all your tables. At the bottom of you will see a box where you can check all. Put a check in this box. Next to the right of where you added the check you will see a dropdown box. Choose optimize in the drop down box. Doing this twice a week will keep your databases optimized and your web site running fast.

Tip of the day !

Today we will give you a tip on how to forward a domain to any domain on your account. The first item is to make sure that at your domain register you use the default parked name servers. You can not forward the domain until it is parked first. Now choose the forwarder after waiting about ten minutes after you parked the domain. After you click on the forwarder tab enter the location you want the domain to point to. That’s it you now have successfully have set up a domain forwarder. Make sure you give it some time to take affect.
